Archaeology of Casco Bay: What Shell Middens Tell Us About Our History
Thomas Bennett of Prince Memorial Library, co-director of the Broad Cove dig, is partnering with CCLT to educate the public about shell middens, their nature and utility, and how private
citizens can become involved in monitoring these important cultural resources. The initiative will launch with a discussion of the post-glacial sequence in Casco Bay, a defining factor in where shell middens might appear in the archaeological record. It will then examine what we know about middens in general and a number of Casco Bay middens in particular.
A two-part series:
March 3: What is a shell midden? What do we know about them? What do they tell us about our past?

April 7: The middens of Casco Bay: An examination and discussion
